DENR Recognizes Clay Rural Water System For Drinking Water
Compliance
PIERRE - The South Dakota Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced that the
Clay Rural Water System public water system and the system's
certified operators have been awarded a Drinking Water
Certificate of Achievement Award. The award is for
outstanding water system operations and environmental
compliance with state drinking water standards for the past
year for both the Wakonda and South Union Service Areas.
The system's certified operators are Tom
Hollingsworth, Phil Iverson, Mike Schuldt, Evan Peterson,
Robert Ganschow and Greg Merrigan.
"The best bargain in South Dakota is
reliable, high quality, safe water from your public drinking
water systems - 24 hours per day - 7 days a week," said DENR
Secretary Steve Pirner. "The managers and operators
receiving this DENR award guaranteed their water was safe by
achieving 100% compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act
during 2011."
To qualify for the Drinking Water
Certificate of Achievement Award, public water systems and
their operators had to meet all of the following
requirements for 2011 :

compliance monitoring,
·
drinking water standards,
·
distribute a Drinking Water Report,
·
lead/copper action levels, and –
·
comply
with operator certification requirements.
Scholarship Winners Announced
The Clay Rural Water System
Board of Directors has announced that Lauren Mews, Pearl
Gaidelis and Alexandra Nelson are recipients of the water
systems annual scholarship program – The Jack and Arlene
DeVany Scholarship Program. All three are seniors in the
Irene-Wakonda School District.
Mews will attend the University of Sioux Falls this fall and
major in business management and music. She is the daughter
of Mike and Mary Mews of rural Wakonda.
Gaidelis will attend Northern Michigan University this fall
and major in Clinical Sciences/Pathology. She is the
daughter of Vitalis and Sonia Gaidelis of rural Wakonda.
Nelson is the daughter of James and Peggy Nelson of rural
Wakonda. She will attend Southeast Technical Institute in
Sioux Falls this fall and pursue a Pharmacy Technician
degree.
The Clay Rural Water System
scholarship is named in honor of the water systems long-time
attorney, the late Jack DeVany and his wife Arlene, a
long-time educator. This is the 20th
year of the program.
Clay RWS Named SD
Rural Water System of the Year
The Clay Rural Water System was named the
2011 SD Rural Water System of the Year at the recent South
Dakota Association of Rural Water Systems Annual Technical
Conference held in Pierre, SD.
Clay RWS was singled out from 30 Class A
rural water systems from across the state. The System was
recognized for planning and carrying out its 2010 Capital
Improvements Project. The project, valued at just over $3.0
million dollars made numerous improvements to the water
systems treatment and distribution system. Clay RW received
$1.25 million in grants for the project. The project was
completed in 2010 and 2011.

Rick Peterson is
Honored
Clay RWS Director Rick Peterson was
honored at the recent South Dakota Association of Rural
Water Systems (SDARWS) Annual Technical Conference held in
Pierre, SD. Peterson was presented The Carroll Anderson
award.
The award is presented each year in
recognition of outstanding voluntary contributions to the
advancement of rural community water systems. The award
represents the greatest tribute the Association can bestow
on an individual to recognize contributions to both the
member system and to SDARWS. Carroll Anderson was a
long-time member of the Kingbrook Rural Water System board
and also served on the SDARWS board.
Peterson has been a member of the Clay
RWS board for ten years. He has served in numerous
capacities as an officer. He also represents Clay RWS on the
SDARWS board, where he serves at Treasurer.
